Gladbach resigned to Ter Stegen’s departure to Barcelona

Marc-Andre ter StegenBorussia Monchengladbach are reportedly resigned to the fact that their young, German international keeper, Marc Andre Ter Stegen will leave the Bundesliga side this summer and become the heir apparent to departing Barcelona goalkeeper, Victor Valdes.

According to Spanish sports daily, Marca, Barcelona sporting director, Andoni Zubizarreta has compiled a list of three names; Atletico Madrid/Chelsea goalkeeper, Thibaut Courtois, former Barcelona youth product and current Napoli keeper, Pepe Reina and the aforementioned Ter Stegen.

Courtois is believed to be president Sandro Rosell’s preferred choice, but seems almost impossible that Chelsea manager, Jose Mourinho would allow the Belgian international to leave, especially to his hated rivals Barcelona. Mourinho has even threatened Courtois with a bench role if he doesn’t sign a new deal.

The exclusion of Courtois from the picture leaves Ter Stegen and Reina, or both.

Barcelona are believed to have been in contact with Ter Stegen but have yet to reach a deal with the club, although Gladbach manager, Lucien Favre admits that it is likely he will leave.

“We hope that he stays with us, but when a club like Barcelona comes for you, well… We have to be realistic, but remain hopeful.”

Reina remains on the table, after it was revealed that he was on his way this past summer before Valdes announced he would stay the final year of his contract, could still join the Blaugrana to guide the young Ter Stegen.
